A night at the Opera
Categories : Entertainment, published on : 2/1/23
A five-minute walk from the Chess Hotel is the Palais Garnier, which hosts the creations of the Paris Opera alternately with those of the Opéra Bastille to an astonishingly high standard, season after season. This superb building, with its majestic staircase, gold ornamentation, the ceiling of the great hall painted by Chagall, and facade of dazzling architectural richness, vies for attention with the exceptional quality of the shows. In February, the programme is once again superb…
Russia and America in Paris
Demonstrating that the Paris Opera excels in both the classical and contemporary repertoire, George Balanchine is in the spotlight with a ballet in two parts. The first, Who Cares?, is a suite built around the music of George Gershwin. Ensembles of dancers and soloists celebrate the richness and multiple influences of the composer's work. The second part returns to the Russian origins of the choreographer with a Ballet Impérial danced to Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 2.
Patrick Dupond, emblematic figure of the Paris Opera
Alternating with George Balanchine, the Palais Garnier is offering a show dedicated to one of its former star dancers, who also won over the general public with his strong and endearing personality: Patrick Dupond. The dancer and artistic director, who died in 2021, enjoyed an exemplary career and distinguished himself in numerous works which are reproduced here on the stage of the Palais Garnier. The pas de deux from the Song of the Wandering Companion by Béjart, Vaslav by Neumeier, and Etudes trace his exceptional career. And although this programme offers the pinnacle of perfection to passionate dance enthusiasts, it is also magnificently accessible to neophytes and those who are simply curious.
Once again, this season, the Opera's productions are of very high quality. Remember to book your tickets well in advance of your break at the Chess Hotel.
