Gabrielle Chanel in the spotlight for the reopening of the Palais Galliera
Categories : Exhibitions and Museums, published on : 3/15/20
As a world hub of creativity and fashion, it’s only right that Paris should have a permanent fashion museum. A victim of its own success and the richness of its collections, the Palais Galliera, also known as the City of Paris Fashion Museum, had to close temporarily so that its basement could be turned into galleries, thereby improving the visitor experience. The good news is it reopens this spring. Your Chess Hotel team recommends a visit!
The much-needed expansion of the Palais Galliera galleries
A superb Beaux-Arts style building dating from the very end of the 19th century, the Palais Galliera has always hosted a museum. Now dedicated exclusively to fashion, it boasts extensive collections of clothes, fabrics and period documents and traces the history of garments and the evolution of fashion over the centuries. Unfortunately, there was not previously enough room for all these artefacts but adding almost 700 m² of exhibition space in the museum’s vaulted cellars will solve the problem!
The essential Gabrielle Chanel
To celebrate its reopening on April 4th, the Palais Galliera had to select a suitably important exhibition theme. Gabrielle Bonheur ‘Coco’ Chanel, an icon of 20th century fashion, was an obvious choice. The late fashion designer embodied French elegance and style. In this exhibition entitled Gabrielle Chanel; Fashion Manifesto, you’ll find a close look at the vision and character of the great lady. Through dozens of clothes, jewellery, perfumes and accessories you can immerse yourself in her creativity and savoir-faire and sample the unique touch that continues to inspire dreams worldwide.
Paris is inseparable from fashion and needs a museum reflecting this. The renovated Palais Galliera will undoubtedly rise to the challenge, especially with its first exhibition. Book your tickets as soon as you arrive at the Chess Hotel!
